I recorded the drums with Will Sparger, who played each percussion instrument separately to eliminate the bleed from other instruments. We recorded all of the drum sounds in the bottom of the cement stairwell to add a nice reverberation to the recording. After the drums were recorded, I arranged them to a loop and began to get some ideas for the bass.
I recorded myself playing my bass guitar through a nice preamp and compressor at my school's studio and mixed the notes into the song. Next up was some analog synth sound from a minimoog, which is what you hear over the verse. Then came the organ which made this song go. I tracked a vintage Fender rhodes organ from keyboardist, Artem Smirnov. He laid down a catchy hook over the chorus that really caught my attention. The next day, I recorded my friend and excellent trombonist, JP Furness, who delivered some silky horn lines over the beginning, and a solo section later in the song. Recording the trombone in the hallway gave a nice natural reverb and sounded real live. Later that evening, Spitty came by the studio and did the damn thing as usual. The chorus he laid down is driving and the verse has some real energy. Well, a sample of the song is below, so you can hear what you are reading. Peace!
