The Fetus

A lot is different since our 2008 debut release, The Abortion. Over the past 2 years, the Illest Rhyme Droppaz has gone through an insane amount of changes and life-altering events, but we finally give you, The Fetus. Let me give you a breakdown on the concept, the making of the album and what’s in store for IRD fans.

THE CONCEPT:
The driving concept behind The Fetus is realization of life, and self/group growth. The Abortion failed and now The Fetus continues to grow. The Abortion as a whole was a mistake (hence the name). It never was thought out, or planned, it just happened out of many drunken nights at the studio (kinda like a one-night stand turned pregnancy). The Fetus represents our growth as artists, as a group and as individuals. These past two years have been filled with re-location, drug addiction, death, depression, doubt and confusion. We also have improved our knowledge and skills in audio engineering, production and writing. These experiences and education have made us grow musically and personally. This album is the stage before birth or “true life”. We are not fully matured, but the growth is sonically visible. The quality, care, and preparation for this album was done as if the record was a fetus in the womb. The next album will be titled, The Birth: Darkness at the Beginning of the Tunnel, where we begin our journey into the music world. At that point, we will be fully confident with ourselves as musicians and as individuals, but until then we have a exciting journey ahead of us, so don’t be expecting that for a little.

THE MAKING OF:
The Fetus has been in the works since the later part of 2008 and was completed this past summer of 2010. We tracked songs for The Fetus, in Brucey B’s Bassment (Old studio), Hyperdrive’s home studio, and UNC of Asheville studios. We used vinyl records, a Korg Triton, a MPC 500, a Korg K61 MIDI controller, and Pro Tools to compose the instrumentals. The beats were made with samples, virtual synth, MIDI and live instruments as well. Brucey played piano on “The Intro” and we had our friends, Matt “The Professional” Lombardi, Adam Obernaur, and Ryan Porciello to come in and lay down guitar. They added a live feel to the album, which we love in our sound. We also had the honor of having Alanna Gedulig, and Sara “Caterina” Constantino lend their beautiful voices on “Dreams” and “You’re Still Here”, respectively. To be honest, a majority of the tracking and was not done with the highest quality possible. This was due to budget constraints, and mainly lack of knowledge. With our new knowledge and access to better equipment, we worked extremely hard on the latest mixes to compensate for past mistakes. I went to my dude, Chris Randazzo, and he actually ran all the mixes thru a Peavy AMR 1600 console and a 24 channel Analog Studer Tape machine at 30 inches per second. This was done to give it our sound a warmer, thicker sound, along with some natural distortion. Expect this to be commonplace in the IRD sound. I got very creative on the mixes using a variety of delays, reverbs, distortion and modulation. For example, ran Sara’s vocals on You’re Still Here, through a heavy distortion effect on Amplitube (a guitar amp plug-in). Also went searching for cool samples to spice things up. We tried to make this album more cohesive, as well cause different emotions throughout. Overall, I'm happy with the final product and think it has favorites for everyone. This is a significent improvement since The Abortion.
Tracklisting and Credits

THE THANK YOUS:
First off I want to a GIGANTIC THANK YOU to everyone who helped or supported us. We say thank you to all the people that provided their talent on the album. In no particular order: Adam Obernaur (guitar), Matt Lombardi (guitar), Sara Constantino (vocals), Alanna Gedulig (vocals), and Ryan Porciello (guitar). You all added an element that is unique and pure awesome. You helped give the album its soul and character, thank you. Big shout out to Brucey B's parents who let us record in their basement and to my parents for letting me record this in theirs, we love you and you're the best. Huge shout out to my man, Chris Randazzo (Dazz), for his excellent engineer work and giving us the best possible sound, and the sound we wanted. His knowledge of the craft absolutely floors me and can't wait to get back in the studio with him. Thank you to Jon Matz, our graphic designer, creative as hell. He is a really nice person and translates our thoughts and ideas into some wild art. We hope to be working with all of you again, very soon. And to all of our fans and supporters, thank you for enjoying our music and giving us a reason to live. Without you, we got nothing. Finally, we want to thank you Kristian and Ryan for being our support for so many years, in and out of music, we all love you and miss you. This bad boy is dedicated to both of you, rest in peace.

THE PRESENT:
IRD and its members went through a lot of crazy shit in the past two years and the lineup has now changed. The Fetus will be the LAST project featuring Ox the Prophet and Jballs. They have decided music is not their career path and have chosen other routes in life. We all remain friends and wish the best for them. The current members: Spitty Crack, Brucey and B and Cpt. Hyperdrive realized this is what we love to do and this is what we want to do for the rest of our lives. Get ready for an explosion of music in the near future. IRD is ready to start the movement, GET ADDICTED!

Signing out,
Cpt Hyperdrive of the Illest Rhyme Droppaz
